The project size can be categorized
into: small, medium and large. For a quick fix, the project can be
deemed as emergency.
Estimating techniques are used based on the inputs (tasks list) and outputs
(effort estimates). Different estimation methods can be used, some of them are
listed below.
Rule of thumb: estimates are deemed based on previous experience.
Delphi: detailed requirement are being evaluated by experts, results combined
and an anonymous document is produced encompassing requirements and assumptions
outlined. This document is returned to the experts, who re-iterate the estimation
tasks. This can be a cyclic process until a consensus has been reached.
Empirical models: deeming project requirements and deliverables using the in-house
experience.
Once the estimates were outlined, they must be evaluated and agreed upon with
the customer. The re-evaluation of estimates during a project occurs at later
stages also, in order to ensure that the project is well managed and resources
are effective.
